The General Inspectorate of the Civil Police (Cogepol) investigates the alleged involvement of civil police in the death of a 15-year-old teenager, a crime that happened last Thursday (28) in Porto Alegre. João Vitor Macedo was injured by gunshots and died during medical treatment at the Emergency Hospital.
According to the Chief of Police of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Fernando Sodréthe victim was found alive on a street in the Agronomia neighborhood. Witnesses reportedly pointed out that those responsible for the crime were police officers.
This Tuesday (2), João’s family and friends blocked a street in the Capital, in protest asking for justice in the case.
Family members say that images recorded by a security camera show the moment in which the teenager, together with another person, runs from a police vehicle, from Avenida Bento Gonçalves, towards a street in the neighborhood. The two enter the street, the car follows behind and everyone leaves the camera frame.
Some time later, the other person is seen in the images running in the opposite direction and the vehicle follows behind. João Victor is not seen. He was later found injured at the scene.
Deputy Sodré confirms the legitimacy of the security camera images. They were not given to the press because, according to the police, it could hinder the investigations.
He explains that the police investigation is trying to clarify what happened at the time that was not recorded on video. He also states that the vehicle seen through the camera is from the Metropolitan Police Department and that two civil police officers were inside it.
João’s mother, Juliana Lopes Macedo, says that her son and the second person were trying to commit robberies on pedestrians when the incident happened. “If he was wrong, he should be in Deca (State Department of Children and Adolescents), he should not be dead,” she says.
