One Preliminary magnitude 7.5 earthquake was recorded on the morning of Wednesday, April 3, in East Asia, causing the collapse of buildings on the island of Taiwan and triggering a tsunami warning in southern Japan.

Television footage captured the moment buildings in the city of Hualien, on Taiwan’s east coast, collapsed, with reports of people trapped under the rubble.

The local earthquake monitoring agency recorded the magnitude at 7.2.

In Japan, the media issued an evacuation warning in the Okinawa archipelago. The earthquake could generate waves of up to three meters in some areas.

Announcers on Japanese public television, NHK, urged people not to go near the coast and to evacuate to higher ground. The broadcast also displayed warnings written in English.

In addition to Taiwan and Japan, the Philippine seismology agency has issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas facing the Pacific Ocean.

According to the United States geological monitoring agency, the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.4, with the epicenter located 18km south of the city of Hualien, at a depth of 34.8km.
