App drivers from Sorriso (397 km from Cuiabá) held a demonstration this Tuesday (02) after the death of their colleague Willames Assunção da Silva, aged 39. Hours earlier, his body had been found in the Lira River.

Escorted by military police, dozens of vehicles traveled the city streets. With horns and black balloons, private transport professionals demanded security in the region.

“Violence can no longer be tolerated. The city of Sorriso, once peaceful, is now the scene of a silent revolt. They ask for safety on the streets, for stricter policies against crime and for a future where no driver needs to fear for their life”, says a message circulating on social media.

Willames had disappeared on Monday (1st). He left his wife at work and started his daily journey as an app driver. Since then he has not maintained contact with his wife, as he used to do.

Witnesses told the police that they saw the driver being forcibly placed in his car, a Honda City, in the São Francisco neighborhood, the same region where his body would be found.

The trio of criminals fled with the victim’s car. The Military Police passed on information about the criminals to other teams and Gefron de Cáceres began following a vehicle that matched the description in the border region, on the BR-174 federal highway.

After realizing they were being monitored by the police, the criminals abandoned the car and fled towards the woods. During the chase, the bandits fired several firearms at the team, who retaliated by shooting at the criminals.

Two of them were hit and, even though they were taken to a health unit, they did not survive. A third criminal remains at large.
