Brazil passed one thousand deaths from dengue in 2024. According to data from the Ministry of Health’s Arbovirus Panel updated this Wednesday (03), the country recorded 1,020 deaths in the first thirteen weeks of this year.

This is the third highest number since the beginning of the historical series, in 2000. The record number of deaths occurred in 2023, with 1,094. The second year with the highest number was 2022 with 1,053.

In the same period last year, in 3 months, Brazil had 388 deaths. Furthermore, to date, 2,671,332 cases were recorded in the first thirteen weeks of this year, an unprecedented rate. In 2023, they were 589,294 cases between weeks 01 and 13.

In February, the Secretary of Health Surveillance of the Ministry of Health, Ethel Maciel, stated that the Ministry of Health’s estimate is that the country will register 4.2 million cases this year.

Of the 27 federation units, eight are in a “consolidated downward trend” and 12 are in a “stability trend”.

“We have a drop in probable dengue cases. This is consolidating. The epidemic in the states is a little different now”, pointed out the secretary.

In total, 11 federation units declared an emergency due to dengue: Acre, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santa Catarina, Amapá, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul and the Federal District.

Dengue: different serotypes in circulation increase the risk of reinfection

Using data relating to laboratory tests carried out to identify dengue, the ministry also mapped which serotypes of the virus are most circulating in the country.

Serotype 1 dengue is the most common in Brazil, being registered in all states. Subsequently, serotype 2 is observed in 24 states and the Federal District.

There is simultaneous circulation of the four dengue serotypes in the national territory, but only Minas Gerais has recorded, to date, the presence of all serotypes acting simultaneously.
