On investors’ radar

The market today should reflect some macroeconomic data. In Brazil, the IPCA-15 slowed to 0.21% in April, compared to an increase of 0.36% in March.

In the United States, the market’s mood soured the day before, due to weak GDP data and a strong quarterly PCE preview. This morning, the monthly PCE was released, which registered an increase of 0.30%, in line with the consensus. The core also rose 0.30%, within expectations.

Investors should also continue to reflect the approval of Petrobras’ dividends, while keeping an eye on the earnings season both in Brazil and abroad.

Asian stock markets close higher after maintaining interest rates in Japan

Asian stock markets closed higher this Friday (26), after the Bank of Japan (BoJ) left its main interest rate unchanged, causing the yen to renew its lowest in more than three decades against the dollar.

Today, the Japanese stock index Nikkei advanced 0.81% in Tokyo, to 37,934.76 points, reversing part of the heavy losses of the previous session, as the BoJ maintained its base interest rate in the range of 0% to 0.1%, after raising it for the first time in 17 years last month.

At a press conference about the decision, BoJ President Kazuo Ueda said that the Japanese Central Bank will, for now, maintain the relaxation of monetary policy, but may increase interest rates again if underlying inflation gains strength. During the night, the dollar was traded at 156.82 yen, reaching a new high in 34 years.

Elsewhere in Asia, the Hang Seng jumped 2.12% in Hong Kong to 17,651.15 points, helped by real estate and technology stocks, while South Korea’s Kospi gained 1.05% in Seoul, at 2,656.33 points, and Taiex registered a gain of 1.32% in Taiwan, at 20,120.51 points.

In mainland China, markets were also in the black, with an increase of 1.17% in the Shanghai Composite, at 3,088.64 points, and 1.78% in the less comprehensive Shenzhen Composite, at 1,728.49 points. Financial services stocks led the gains after the State Council, China’s top decision-making body, said it will encourage the strengthening of large securities companies.

In Oceania, the Australian stock market suffered a significant drop upon returning from a holiday, influenced in part by the mining sector. The S&P/ASX 200 fell 1.39% in Sydney, to 7,575.90 points. BHP shares fell 4.6% after Anglo American rejected an offer to buy the Anglo-Australian mining company.
