Some papaya producers, to take advantage of high prices, are selling unripe fruits on the market Pxhere/CreativeCommons
Hawaiian papaya or papaya prices fell last week in the main producing regions. According to a survey by the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea) at Esalq/USP, the average price was R$ 7 per kilo in the north of Espírito Santo and the south of Bahia, respective drops of 19% and 21%, compared to to the previous period.
In addition to the buyer retraction, supply increased a little, which explains the recent drops. Some producers, to take advantage of high price levels, are selling green fruits on the market.
At the same time, Cepea researchers explain that this could create a bottleneck in commerce, as they are not as accepted by consumers and could put even more pressure on prices.
