Today we celebrate a very special 25th of April, with a special on TVCine channels.

Today we celebrate 50 years since the dictatorship ended in Portugal and the democratic period began in our country, and for this TVCine Edition has prepared a special program for this day that includes several films and documentaries where we can reflect on the events that happened that day April 25, 1974.

ANOTHER COUNTRY

“Outro País” is a documentary by Sérgio Tréfaut that will be broadcast from 11:40 am, on TVCine Edition, where we see the events of the Portuguese Revolution through the eyes of international photographers and filmmakers who lived through this historic moment.

The documentary features Sebastião Salgado (Brazilian photographer), Glauber Rocha (Brazilian filmmaker), Robert Kramer (North American director), Thomas Harlan (German writer and director), Pea Holmquist (Swedish film producer), Guy Le Querrec (photographer French), Jean Gaumy (French photographer), Dominique Issermann (French photographer) and Chico Buarque (Brazilian singer).

“O Que Podem As Palavras” is broadcast from 12:50 pm, on TVCine Edition. This documentary tells the story of the “Three Marias”, Maria Isabel Barreno, Maria Teresa Horta and Maria Velho da Costa. These three women, in 1972, wrote and published the book “Novas Cartas Portuguesas”, which was immediately banned by the Portuguese political police and the three were tried for an attack on morals, which led to this case becoming the First Feminist Action International.


ARISTIDES DE SOUSA MENDES – THE CONSUL OF BORDEAUX

“Aristides de Sousa Mendes – The Consul of Bordeaux” was a film directed by Francisco Manso and João Correa, broadcast at 2:10 pm, on TVCine Edition.

This feature film tells the true story of a Portuguese hero who saved more than 30,000 lives during the Second World War. When France is invaded by the Nazis, a large number of Jews begin to gather at the Portuguese consulate in the city of Bordeaux, but Salazar banned the granting of visas to Jews. This left the consul at a crossroads, with his career and family on one side and the horrors he knew would happen to the Jews if they were caught on the other.

This film features Vítor Norte as the consul, Carlos Paulo, Leonor Seixas and Laura Soveral.


AT AN UNCERTAIN TIME

“A Uma Hora Incerta” is a film by Carlos Saboga that will be broadcast from 3:40 pm, on TVCine Edition. This production takes place in 1942, when Portugal was under dictatorship, where two French refugees were arrested. However, an investigator decides to hide them inside his home, an empty hotel where he lives with his daughter and his sick wife. It turns out that the investigator falls in love with the French woman and his wife ends up finding out and will try to make the French disappear from their house.

The cast includes Joana Ribeiro, Paulo Pires, Judith Davis, Filipa Areosa and Pedro Lima.


ASSAULT ON SANTA MARIA

“Assalto ao Santa Maria” will be broadcast at 4:55 pm, on TVCine Edition, and is based on real events. This film by Francisco Manso follows the story of a young Portuguese emigrant, who is unhappy with his life, and meets Captain Henrique Galvão, an opponent of Salazar’s regime. This will lead to this young man joining other Portuguese and Galicians and preparing something never seen before: the assault and occupation of the Portuguese navy packet “Santa Maria”.

The cast includes Carlos Paulo, Pedro Cunha, Leonor Seixas, Vítor Norte and Alfonso Agra.


OPERATION AUTUMN

“Operação Outono” is a thriller by Bruno de Almeida that will be broadcast at 6:40 pm, on TVCine Edition. This project is based on real events where we focus on the trap that led to the assassination of General Humberto Delgado in 1965, by PIDE.

This film features John Ventimiglia, Carlos Santos, Nuno Lopes, Marcello Urgeghe and Diogo Dória.


MAIA WILLOW – THE IMPLICATE

“Salgueiro Maia – O Implicado” will be broadcast at 8:25 pm, on TVCine Edition. This film focuses on the man who became an unavoidable figure on April 25, 1974, Captain Fernando Salgueiro Maia.

This man entered Largo do Carmo alone and unarmed, entered the GNR barracks where Marcelo Caetano was being held and asked for his surrender, guaranteeing his safety. And so, Salgueiro Maia managed to overthrow a dictatorial regime that ruled Portugal for 48 years without firing a single shot.

The cast includes Tomás Alves, Tiago Teotónio Pereira, Filipa Areosa, Catarina Wallenstein and José Condessa.


HOMELAND

“Pátria” is a film by Bruno Gascon that will be broadcast at 10pm, on TVCine Edition. This feature film takes place in Portugal dominated by a dictatorship, where the 25th of April never happened, and a man will be confronted by the growth of an extremist group that will put everyone in danger. There is only one choice: freedom or death.

The cast includes Tomás Alves, Rafael Morais, Michalina Olszanska, Matamba Joaquim, João Vicente, Iris Cayatte. Ricardo Correia and Raimundo Cosme.
