O pilot of a Latam Airlines flight – investigated for an incident that left 50 injured – reportedly told passengers that he temporarily lost control of the Boeing 787 due to an instrument malfunction, reports The Independent.

On Monday, a company flight from Australia to New Zealand abruptly crashed in mid-air after what was described as a “technical event”. The incident threw some passengers out of their seats, with many suffering injuries as a result.

An investigation into the incident was initiated by the Chilean Aeronautical Authority, as the aircraft involved was registered in Chile.

Brian Jokat, one of the 263 passengers and nine crew on the flight, said he was sleeping before the incident happened and woke up to find people on the ground. “When I opened my eyes there were several individuals on top of the plane. They got stuck on the roof and fell to the ground. And then I realized it wasn’t in a movie, this is real,” Jokat told CNN International.

After landing at Auckland Airport, the passenger said the pilot explained that he “lost control of the plane”.

The injured, one with a serious prognosis and the others with moderate and minor injuries, were treated after landing at the airport in the New Zealand city of Auckland.

“Flight LA800, which was connecting Sydney [Austrália] and Auckland, there was a technical problem during the flight that caused a strong movement (…). As a result of the incident, some passengers and cabin crew were affected,” Latam said in a statement.

While the airline did not provide details about the technical glitch, several passengers reported a “small rapid crash.”

New Zealand’s Hato Hone St. John Emergency Service told Spanish agency EFE in a statement that its staff assessed and treated a total of 50 people, of whom one is in a “serious” condition and the rest in a “moderate” condition. or “slight”.

Of the total number of injured, 13 patients were taken to an Auckland hospital, Emergency Service spokesman Hato Hone St. John added.

Flight LA800 was on the route between Sydney and Santiago, Chile, with a stop in Auckland. It carried 263 passengers and nine crew.

A video began circulating on social media, showing several passengers already seated, while others were being watched. You can see it here.
