The Russian ambassador also referred to Kiev’s economic situation, arguing that the country also depends on financing from the West, which he accuses of being responsible for prolonging the war.
Some of the Western countries that make up the Security Council, such as the United Kingdom, have pointed out that it is Moscow that pays the “profound cost” of “President Vladimir Putin’s neo-imperialist vanity”.
“The Russian economy lost $400 billion (€370.1 billion) through sanctions and hundreds of thousands of young Russians left to seek opportunities abroad. For those who stayed, freedom of expression was silenced. More 20,000 were arrested for opposing Putin’s war”, argued British diplomat Thomas Phipps.
Still according to Phipps, the Russian Black Sea Fleet was decimated and almost 3,000 tanks and 105 aircraft were destroyed.
“The Russian military suffered more than 350,000 casualties. Of course we won’t hear about this on Russian television, but it is all too real for more than a million Russian mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers touched by the tragedy of President Putin’s arrogance,” he stressed. .
“And all this for a war that Russia cannot win. Russia cannot win because, through their courage and ingenuity, the Ukrainians have demonstrated that they will not be subjugated (…) and because the international community will not abandon Ukraine ” , assured the Briton.
US diplomat Robert Wood highlighted that Russia has acquired weapons from “rogue regimes”, such as Iran and North Korea, in violation of Security Council resolutions.
Ukraine, which was invaded by Russia on February 24, 2022, depends on Western assistance in weapons to face Russian troops.
Kiev launched a counteroffensive in the summer with modest results, which it attributed to delays in the arrival of weapons, and has criticized the hesitations of some countries in sending weapons.
Moscow responded to the counteroffensive with an increase in attacks against Ukraine in recent months.
