Kyiv assures that it will receive ‘Patriot’ systems “from wherever they come”

-

“PI can guarantee that there will be new ‘Patriots’. And frankly, for us it’s secondary to where they come from. The main thing is that they come as quickly as possible, because this is the protection of our cities, the protection of our people,” said the adviser to the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky.

Yermak stated that Ukrainian authorities hold daily talks with their main partners on this issue, especially with the United States, as they are the manufacturers of the ‘Patriot’ systems.

“This is their weapon and, of course, a lot depends on them [Estados Unidos]”, said Yermak.

Ukraine has focused its demands and appeals in recent months on this anti-aircraft system, which it considers a priority to be able to face Russian attacks at a time when Ukrainian arsenals appear to be suffering from a shortage of weapons.

The foreign and defense ministers of the 27 European Union (EU) member states met on Monday in Luxembourg to discuss the possible shipment of six ‘Patriots’ systems to Ukraine, although no agreement was reached.

Attention is focused on several European countries, including Spain, which has the ‘Patriot’ system but has not yet confirmed any shipments to Ukraine.

Ukraine has relied on financial and weapons aid from Western allies since Russia invaded the country on February 24, 2022.

Kiev’s allies have also enacted sanctions against key sectors of the Russian economy to try to diminish Moscow’s ability to finance the war effort in Ukraine.

Recent months have been marked by large-scale Russian airstrikes against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, while Kiev’s forces have targeted targets on Russian territory close to the border and on the Crimean peninsula, illegally annexed in 2014.

Already in the third year of war, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have been faced with a lack of weapons and ammunition, despite repeated promises of help from Western allies.
