Turning 80 this Wednesday (13), journalist Cassiano Arruda Câmara launches his book “Jornal de Cassiano Arruda: 50 anos de reporting” on March 21st. The event for guests takes place from 7pm, at Thomé Galeria & Bistrô and all proceeds from sales will be donated to the League Against Cancer.
According to Cassiano, the idea came about after he discovered cancer and underwent treatment at the League. “I was very surprised by the quality of the treatment I received, without distinction between patients. I felt indebted and, as a way of saying thank you for everything I received, I decided to donate the copies of the books, which were already ready, so that the amount raised from the sale would go to the League”, explains the journalist.
The work brings together the most striking reports written by the journalist during his career. The texts are divided into the areas of culture, sports, politics, economics, science and technology. The selection of texts was made by journalist Adriano de Souza.
They are records of moments that marked the history of Rio Grande do Norte, such as the political polarization between Dinarte Mariz and Aluízio Alves, the career of the then young player Marinho Chagas who, at 22 years old, played for Botafogo and even an interview with a of the last bullock cart manufacturers and the arrival of the first surfboard in Natal.
The League’s superintendent, Roberto Sales, highlights the importance of donations for maintaining the institution’s services. “It is with gestures from people like Cassiano Arruda that the League is able to maintain treatment for both adults and children in such an efficient and equal way,” he says.
The League Against Cancer
A philanthropic institution, the League Against Cancer assists a large part of the cancer cases in Rio Grande do Norte, the majority of which are patients from the Unified Health System (SUS). Therefore, donations are essential for maintaining financial balance and projects such as the Sister Gabriela Support House, the Pain Clinic and the Mercearia da Liga, which delivers more than a thousand nutritional kits per semester.
The resources are also used for service expansion projects. Among them is the renovation of the Dr. Luiz Antônio Hospital, which will increase service capacity by 40%, the construction of the new Pediatric Oncology Hospital, which will also have an exclusive sector for Bone Marrow Transplantation, and the Diagnosis and Teaching in Currais Novos, reinforcing the capacity to care for patients in the interior.
