Reading is capable of transporting people to the most diverse periods, places and even imaginary dimensions. A reference on the subject, the center of Vitória brings together more than 30 thousand copies in spaces such as the Adelpho Poli Monjardim Municipal Library, the Maria Stella de Novaes Support Library, from the Public Archive, and the Sesc Glória library.

At the Adelpho Poli Monjardim Municipal Library, more than 20 thousand volumes can be found on the shelves, according to librarian Elizete Caser.

“The library has already operated in several locations. It was created in 1941 under the name Biblio-Pinacoteca. In 2016 he came here to Casarão Cerqueira Lima, where he currently works.”

The name of the place is a tribute to the son of the Baron of Monjardim. Adelpho was a writer and was the author of several works, including “Tesouro da Ilha da Trindade”, “Sombre Novelas”, “Vitória Physics”, “A Baía de Vitória” and “Bolívar e Caxias, Paralelo entre Duas Vidas”.

Among the collection, examples of literature stand out. “There are approximately 20 thousand volumes divided between literature, areas of knowledge, Education, Philosophy, Psychology, Law, Administration, Geography, History, among others. We also have a collection of Braille and audiobooks.”

The copies that are on site can be rented by anyone, upon registration. The loan period is 10 days and can be renewed depending on demand for the copy.

“In addition to the loan, we hold events focused on the literary universe. To participate, simply find out about the day and times on the Vitória City Hall website, where the schedules are published.”

The reading promotion project “Viagem Pela Literatura” has been developed for 30 years. “There are various activities such as storytelling, meeting with writers, lectures, theater. We generally use themed, commemorative dates to hold events. As this month is women’s month, we are doing lectures and soirees, for example.”

In addition, the place also houses the Book Exchange Stand, which is held on the last Monday of each month.

“The Book Exchange Stand is a way for books to circulate and people to have the opportunity to exchange the books they have at home, which they have already read, for another. The book in good condition can be exchanged for one that is on the newsstand. The book cannot be didactic either,” she explained.

At the Maria Stella de Novaes Support Library, from the Public Archive, the focus is on materials and productions from Espírito Santo. On site, the collection is not loaned. If they wish, researchers or other interested people can carry out their searches there, where there is a microfilm reader. Fernando Soares, 27 years old, is a historian and is pursuing a doctorate. He uses the space to carry out part of his research.

“I’m researching microfilms from newspapers from the 70s. I’m looking for news about the disappearance of the girl Araceli, in 1973. This is part of my research, which aims to study the memory of the Araceli case”, he explained.

At the Guilherme Santos Neves Library, at Sesc Glória, located at Avenida Jerônimo Monteiro, 428, in the Center, the accessibility equipment stands out among the copies, which can be heard by the visually impaired.

Librarian Bianca Sizini explains: “The scanner makes our entire collection accessible. You place the book there open, it scans it and reads it out loud instantly,” she reports.

Furthermore, the local collection meets the entire cultural environment offered by Sesc Glória.
