Retinoids “is a generic term for the entire family of vitamin A derivatives”, including retinol, “the most famous of this group of active ingredients that improve the skin”, explains Maryam Zamani, a doctor, quoted in Woman & Home.

“It has been proven to support cell renewal and stimulate collagen production, while reducing oiliness and evening out the complexion”, adds the expert.

It is very important to apply it in the correct way (and at the right time) to avoid experiencing side effects. For example, Mariam Abbas, a facialist, explains that you should start using retinol very slowly and “increase the frequency of use very slowly.”

Start by using it just two nights a week and then “slowly increase the frequency of use over three to four weeks.” Eventually he starts using it “every night or every other night.”

Do you want to try it? Catriona Maybury, another doctor, recommends applying retinol at night and after cleansing your skin. First, “apply your moisturizer in a thin layer to your face and neck,” then apply your retinol. Wait about two minutes and add another layer of moisturizer on top. It’s a method that “doesn’t affect the potency of your retinol and has been shown to help alleviate side effects like dry or flaky skin.”

Mariam Abbas reminds us of the importance of starting slowly with a low, gentle concentration. He further explains that individuals with a skin condition or very sensitive skin should not use retinol. Lastly, she emphasizes that “retinol should not be used by pregnant women.”
