From birth to death, including marriages and divorces, the Covid-19 pandemic impacted the lives of people in Mato Grosso do Sul. The social distancing imposed, especially in 2021, caused people to postpone the decision to get married and divorce. But it also reached a record number of deaths.

Civil registration statistics released this Wednesday (27) by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), show that in 2021, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, Mato Grosso do Sul recorded a record number of deaths. There were 24,646 deaths, the highest number since the beginning of the historical series in 2000.

In 2022, death data returned to normal, with 20,030 deaths recorded, a decrease of 18.7% compared to 2021. Of these, 18,808 natural deaths and 1,215 unnatural deaths were recorded in the state.

Pandemic postponed weddings and divorces

In Mato Grosso do Sul, social distancing postponed wedding and divorce plans. There were 15 thousand marriages registered in 2022, almost 1 thousand more than in 2021. In 2021, only in the months of September and October, the number of civil marriage registrations surpassed the number observed in the same month of 2019 (prior to the pandemic).

Mato Grosso do Sul is in 5th place among the UFs according to the marriage rate. Generally, men marry at the age of 31 and women at the age of 28, considering opposite-sex couples.

In relation to divorces, Mato Grosso do Sul appears with the second highest rate in the country. In 2022, 7,600 divorces were registered in the State, the highest number in four years, while in 2021 there were 5,300 divorces.
