Ten neighborhoods in Fortaleza have a high incidence rate of dengue cases from the beginning of 2024 until Epidemiological Week 11 (SE), related to March 13th. The data are from the most recent epidemiological bulletin on arboviruses released by the Municipal Health Department (SMS).

The scenario is observed in the neighborhoods Luciano Cavalcante (34.5), Meireles (29), Couto Fernandes (28), John XXIII (18.9), Santa Rosa Park (17.9), José Bonifacio (16.9), Vila Manoel Sátiro (15.5), Rodolfo Teófilo (9.5), Iracema Garden (6.4) and Guanabara Garden (6.3). This year, Fortaleza reported 1,962 cases, 113 of which were confirmed, 1,041 discarded and the rest still without results.

Of those confirmed, 68 were by laboratory criteria and 45 by clinical epidemiological criteria. The neighborhoods with the highest records throughout the year were: José Walter (4), Jardim Cearense (4), Centro (4), Cocó (4), Couto Fernandes (4), João XXIII (3), Cristo Redentor ( 3), Rodolfo Teófilo (2), José Bonifácio (2) and Jardim Guanabara (1).

The majority of reported cases were registered in adults aged 19 to 59, with 1,416 notifications. Then, in children and adolescents aged 10 to 18, with 256 cases; in children, from 0 to 9 years old, there were 178, and elderly people over 60 years old, 112.

The data points to a positive epidemiological scenario compared to the same period last year in Fortaleza. The Capital had a 46% reduction in notifications of the disease this year. Between the first SE and the tenth SE compared to 2023, there were 3,634 notifications last year and 1,959 notifications this year.

According to the manager of the Environmental Surveillance and Biological Risks Cell at SMS, Atualpa Soares, despite the few confirmations, the scenario is one of warning for the coming months. “We have less than 150 confirmed cases. It is in the very low transmission bias. However, we always remember that the most critical months start from March, which is when our rains intensify,” she said.

According to Atualpa, actions are being intensified at this time to avoid an increase in cases in the coming months. “Our epidemiological indices show that the vector continues to circulate. Despite the few cases, this is not the time to let our guard down”, he assesses. In Fortaleza, to request home inspections or report possible dengue outbreaks, the population can use the telephone 0800 285 0880.

In Ceará, as of Epidemiological Week 13, there are 10,885 reported cases. In relation to those confirmed, there were 1,088 cases of dengue in Ceará this year. In the State, six people developed a severe form of the disease and died. Data from IntegraSUS, from the Ceará State Health Department (Sesa), compiled this Tuesday, 26.

Operation against arboviruses is carried out in the Capital and Metropolitan Region of Fortaleza

An operation in conjunction with the City of Fortaleza and the municipality of Caucaia was carried out yesterday, the 26th, and continues until Wednesday, the 27th, to combat the mosquito Aedes aegypti – transmitter of dengue, zika and chikungunya. The objective is to encourage the population to adopt preventive measures against arboviruses.

Operation Border began in Conjunto Ceará and in seven other neighborhoods that border Caucaia. In total, 160 agents to combat endemic diseases (ACEs) from Fortaleza will cover around 215 blocks and 15 thousand properties. In Caucaia, there will be around 50 agents, visiting 4 thousand properties in four neighborhoods.

Day laborer Clara Janaína, 33, had chikungunya six years ago and remembers the symptoms and consequences of the disease. “A lot of pain, high fever and not to mention those little balls that remain. To this day, I still experience joint pain, especially when the weather is very cold. The work to prevent dengue fever is not just mine and not just yours, it belongs to everyone”, she highlights.

App driver Walteles Morais, 45, received the operation team and highlighted the importance of actions to prevent the disease. “If we take care here, it prevents it for us, as well as for our neighbors. The important thing is that everyone does their part. All the containers are turned over so that no water accumulates and we try to do what we can to protect ourselves,” he comments.

Among the factors for carrying out the operation at the limit between municipalities, Atualpa highlights the epidemiological scenario and lack of delimitation in the regions. “The municipalities end up playing for each other and not working very well. By common agreement and focusing exclusively on public health, the concern is divided between the two municipalities”, he states.

The following neighborhoods will be served in this phase of the operation. They are: Conjunto Ceará I and II, Genibaú, Antônio Bezerra, Quintino Cunha, Siqueira and Granja Lisboa and, in Caucaia, in the neighborhoods Parque Albano, Conjunto São Miguel, Parque Guadalajara and Marechal Rondon.

Among the activities, the agents will carry out vector control activities, home visits, health education with the Fortaleza Inspection Agency (Agefis) at strategic points, spatial and residual chemical action, deratization for rodent control, rapid DPP tests on dogs , in addition to educational exhibitions and sound dissemination.
