Eucalipto de Contige is the winner of the 6th national edition of the Tree of the Year, and will represent Portugal in this year’s international competition.

According to the communiqué from the União de Floresta Mediterrânea, this year the public elected the Eucalipto de Contige, located in the parish and municipality of Satão, with 3046 votes, in one of the closest polls ever among the top 3 places.

The Contige Eucalyptus, planted in 1878, is considered by the University of Aveiro as “the largest classified tree in Portugal”. This approximately 140-year-old specimen has remained despite all the urban and road interventions in its surroundings.

This eucalyptus has been classified as of public interest since August 1964, when, due to its dimensions, it was already a remarkable tree.

Eucalipto de Contige will represent Portugal in the European competition Tree of the Year, whose voting will take place online during the month of February 2023. The stories of the ten national trees that were in the competition are available here, as well as the results of the national contest.
