ANDn a response to Lusa, following a request on the subject submitted by the councilor of the Left Block in the Lisbon Chamber, Beatriz Gomes Dias, the capital’s municipality states that, within the framework of the requalification of Jardim António Feijó, designed by the Parish Council de Arroios, partnered with “various entities to find solutions for sheltering homeless people who were staying overnight”.

In the same response, the Chamber adds that the referral was “developed in consultation with the High Commission for Migrations, with Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa and with private institutions of social solidarity”, in addition to the Parish Council of Arroios itself.

The 25 people were referred by teams from the Homeless Planning and Intervention Center (NPISA) in Lisbon “to different shelter responses, including the Municipal Emergency Shelter Center and the Housing First project”.

In a request dated Monday, Bloco de Esquerda questioned the mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas (PSD), about the removal of homeless people who until now had stayed overnight in the Anjos area.

Beatriz Gomes Dias recalled that since May 2022 “some people in a homeless situation” had been staying overnight next to the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos, a number that increased during the summer, with “a donation of tents being set up in that space” for the winter season.

According to the councilwoman, on Friday “the tents and people disappeared and bars were placed around the Garden” António Feijó, which led her to question the municipality about “what kind of action was taken to remove people ” and “from whom the initiative came” to do so, who carried out the action (and whether the Lisbon City Council was involved) and what solutions were found for these people and for what duration.
