Women who stole gold and money from homes, worth a total estimated at tens of thousands of euros, while cleaning the house, were accused, the PSP’s Lisbon Metropolitan Command (Cometlis) reported this Friday.

In a statement, the PSP reported that, through the Criminal Investigation Division, it launched a police operation called “Golden Cleaning” on Thursday to execute search and seizure warrants.

“The investigation focused on a group of women who stole gold from homes while cleaning the house”, the note reads, adding that, after several weeks of investigation and testimonies from the victims, it was concluded for “the theft of a set of gold pieces valued at 32,000 euros and 15,000 euros in banknotes” from various residences.

As part of the operation, “in several areas of the Lisbon district”, “dozens of gold and silver pieces were seized from the residences in which the group of suspects were cleaning”.

“The suspects had a well-defined and coordinated action, stealing the jewelery pieces and selling them later, earning thousands of euros”, said the PSP.

The searches also resulted in “the seizure of 3,500 euros in ECB notes [Banco Central Europeu] and computer equipment, possibly purchased on the receiver market”, the note states.

According to the PSP Metropolitan Command, the suspects “had their criminal activity interrupted” and were “constituted defendants”, and the “investigation continues with a view to returning the gold and returning it to the legitimate owners”.

Lusa contacted PSP’s Cometlis, but it has so far been impossible to obtain additional clarification about the group’s areas of activity and how many people have been accused.
