Minho businesspeople, associated with AE Minho, ask the new elected officials to put Portugal’s stability first. The Association leaves its concerns in a statement.

When reading the electoral results from the 10th of March, “in conjunction with the news that has been made public about the different positions of the political forces involved in this process”, the Minho Business Association understands that “it is essential to take into account factors relevant and decisive for the future of the country and the economy”.

The Association argues that “in a democracy the will is expressed by voting” and, therefore, “it is imperative to respect the distribution of votes and the resulting correlation of forces, ensuring that all are duly considered”.

He also emphasizes that “in democracy it is intended that no one be ignored”, so “all party forces involved in the country’s political scene have the constitutional and moral obligation to act in this way, in strict respect for the electoral results that are the mirror the will of the Portuguese people”.

“The country is going through a crucial moment for the future of its economy”, highlights AEMinho.

“It is important that everyone understands that government stability and viability are today, more than ever, vital to guarantee the economic growth we desire, with the creation of the necessary conditions to maintain and increase the attractiveness for foreign investment, the creation of wealth which are the only way to guarantee better wages and better living conditions.”

It can also be read that, “despite “the economic emergency that could result from a possible government stagnation”, the Association believes that “there are structural problems in the country that require a quick, assertive and efficient response”.

Here, he refers to “health, education, justice and social assistance, fundamental pillars of any contemporary and progressive society” and which “are in a state of flagrant decadence, configuring a scenario of national emergency”.

AEMinho warns that “interventions in these areas will be late tomorrow and cannot be subject to partisan games”. Therefore, “today, the national interest must prevail”. “This is the time of responsibility, cooperation and a sense of state.

All elected deputies owe it to the Portuguese, without exceptions. This is not the story of politician “a” or “b”, of party “x” or “y”. This is the story of a democratically elected parliament, with a clear tendency to promote diversity, consensus and unity,” he says.

In this way, it ends with an appeal “to all political forces to reflect on their role, resulting from the elections, in the country’s democratic framework and to put Portugal’s interests ahead of their own”.

Even though “this is a new scenario, it should not generate negative alliances, but rather consensus that this new framework imposes”. For the Association, “holding an elected public position is exactly understanding that the path dictated by voters, even when it does not represent our starting point”.
