The Capela de Guadalupe, in Braga, hosts on Thursday, the 21st, at 9:30 pm, the “Botar das Almas”, an event included in the cultural program of the Burrinha Procession.

The “Botar das Almas” was an informal act sung that took place mainly in villages, in order to evoke the memory of deceased loved ones. It was a common practice in the month of November, called the month of Souls or during Lent.

The cultural night begins with the “Mulheres do Minho” singing group singing to the souls, in the outer enclosure of the Guadalupe Chapel, giving way to a second moment of “ordering the souls”.

The repertoire of the Song Group “Mulheres do Minho” includes several songs from the Minho songbook during the Lenten season, highlighting the “Incelências” or the “Misericordias”.

The Song Group “Mulheres do Minho” was founded in 1997, in the city of Braga, by Ana Maria Azevedo, based on her research as part of her master’s degree in Portuguese Culture and Literature in the Popular Area, which resulted in the thesis “Os Cantares Polifónicos das Women of Baixo Minho”.

“Botar das Almas” is an initiative that aims to perpetuate traditions, associating polyphonic music with the heritage of the Guadalupe Chapel, which has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 2012.

The event, part of the cultural program of the Burrinha Procession and the Solemnities of Holy Week, aims to invite everyone to attend the Biblical Procession “Vós Sereis o Meu Povo”, which takes to the streets on March 27th.
