To celebrate the International Day of Forests, Viana do Castelo City Council promoted activities aimed at raising awareness about the importance of forests for the planet, with a view to recovering and promoting the sustainable use of forest ecosystems, highlighting the planting of two hundreds of forest species in Monte de Santa Luzia.
The celebrations of this day, which this year had the theme ‘Forests and Innovation: New solutions for a better world’, began with the planting of 200 forest species by employees from different departments of the municipality, who contributed to the reforestation of an area of around 5000 m2 on the most iconic hill in Viana do Castelo, Monte de Santa Luzia. Different species were planted, most of them indigenous. In this activity, members of the GNR and the Viana do Castelo Territorial Command also joined in, who, to mark this day, carried out a “Walk through the Forest” and symbolically also planted trees.

In another location, namely in the Natural Monument of the Climbing Dunes of Faro de Anha (Monte Galeão), in the afternoon a plantation of approximately 50 native forest species was carried out.
Still part of the Celebration of the International Day of Forests, this week, at the Monserrate Secondary School, on the initiative of its Parents’ Association, involving students and teachers from different years, a planting of a garden area measuring around 200m2 using species autochthonous.
