O Sporting won its fifth Portuguese Cup in volleyball, this Sunday, by beating Fonte do Bastardo in ‘negra’ (3-2), in Viana do Castelo, after having eliminated rival Benfica, holder of the trophy, this Saturday, 3-1.
The lions came out stronger and closed the first set with an advantage (25-16), and the Azoreans responded immediately in the second set (20-25), leaving everything the same in the match.
History would eventually repeat itself. Sporting regained the advantage by winning with a 25-22 partial and, in response, Fonte do Bastardo forced another set in the match, repeating the 20-25.
Already in the ‘black’, it would be the Alvalade emblem smiling and, with a very close 22-20, winning its fifth Portuguese Cup, against a team that fell for the third consecutive time in the final match of the competition (the last two against Benfica).
With this achievement, Sporting equals Leixões (5) and approaches rivals FC Porto (6) and Castêlo da Maia in the number of Portuguese Cups won, well behind Sporting de Espinho’s 12 and Benfica’s 20. Behind are Fonte do Bastardo, Vitória SC, Esmoriz, Técnico and ISEF Lisboa, with one victory each.
