“Doctor Miguel Albuquerque is capable of continuing to serve as president of the Regional Government, due to two very recent facts. The PSD/CDS-PP coalition unequivocally wins the elections [legislativas] from March 10th to the Assembly of the Republic and has another legitimacy that comes from a very recent internal process”, stated Rui Barreto.

The CDS-PP Madeira considered that Miguel Albuquerque has “reinforced conditions” to continue exercising the functions of president of the Regional Government, but expressed his preparedness for early elections, if that is the decision of the President of the Republic.

The leader of the CDS-PP Madeira spoke to journalists after an audience with the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who is today receiving at the Palácio de Belém, in Lisbon, the parties represented in the Madeiran parliament about the political crisis in the archipelago, triggered by the dismissal of the president of the executive, Miguel Albuquerque, who was made a defendant as part of a process in which suspicions of corruption in the region are investigated.

“We understand that there are conditions for a majority between PSD and CDS of 23 deputies in the regional parliament to guarantee conditions of stability, the pursuit of policies on behalf of the people of the Autonomous Region of Madeira”, added the regional secretary for Economy of the Regional Government , from the PSD/CDS-PP coalition.

However, the leader of CDS-PP Madeira stressed that the party is “very prepared” to go to elections, if Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s option is to dissolve parliament and call new elections.

The Madeiran centrist leader was accompanied by the president of the Regional Legislative Assembly and candidate for the presidency of the CDS-PP regional structure, José Manuel Rodrigues, and by the national leader Telmo Correia, who underlined the party’s unity and highlighted the “very important role” that has been carried out by the CDS-PP, particularly since 2019, in supporting the regional Government.

“The CDS-PP is – and came to tell the President of the Republic this – available to guarantee and maintain this availability, if that is the President’s decision. Obviously not having any fear, if the decision is different, of going to an electoral event”, stated Telmo Correia.
