Nuno Melo, 58 years old, was born in Joane, Vila Nova de Famalicão, and arrived at the Assembly of the Republic in the VIII legislature, in 1999, elected by Braga, a circle for which he ran in the following two legislatures, being elected parliamentary leader in July 2004 and vice-president of parliament in 2007.

In the Assembly of the Republic, it was noted in several of the commissions of inquiry that investigated the plane crash that killed former Prime Minister Sá Carneiro and former Defense Minister Amaro da Costa in Camarate, on December 4, 1980. , presiding over one of them, and also had a central role in another parliamentary inquiry into Banco Português de Negócios.

He was one of the rising faces of Paulo Portas’ first leadership and, when he left the party presidency, in 2005, he was also one of the first to express his regrets, already under the direction of José Ribeiro e Castro.

At a CDS-PP Christmas dinner in 2006, Nuno Melo said that the CDS “missed” former leader Paulo Portas and stated that he would work so that the party could be “well led”, which would earn him his retirement of political trust on the part of Ribeiro e Castro and would culminate in his dismissal as president of the bench in January 2007.

With Portas’ return to the presidency of the CDS-PP, Nuno Melo becomes vice-president of the Assembly of the Republic.

In 2009, he was head of the CDS list for the European Parliament for the first time, the year in which the party managed to elect two deputies.

In 2014, the CDS-PP competed in the European competitions in alliance with the PSD and Nuno Melo was fourth on the list headed by Paulo Rangel.

In the following election, in 2019, the centrists once again ran on their own list and managed to keep Nuno Melo in the European Parliament, a mandate he maintained until this month, when he resigned to take on the role of deputy to the Assembly of the Republic, since the two mandates are incompatible.

Father of twins, a boy and a girl, João Nuno Lacerda Teixeira de Melo, born on March 18, 1966, has a degree in Law and was a lawyer by profession, before dedicating himself to a political career.

In the party, he was vice-president of Paulo Portas and, later, of Assunção Cristas, and president of the Braga district for several years.

At municipal level, he is president of the Municipal Assembly of Vila Nova de Famalicão.

The January 2022 legislative elections dictated the removal of the CDS-PP from the Assembly of the Republic for the first time in its history, which led to the resignation of former president Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos.

Nuno Melo, who had already presented his candidacy for leadership of the CDS-PP in October of the previous year, was elected president of the party in April 2022, with his National Political Commission obtaining 74.93% of the delegates’ votes at the 29th. Congress that took place in Guimarães.

During his term, he managed to take the party back to the hemicycle of parliament, after managing to elect two deputies on the lists of the Democratic Alliance (AD), a coalition that brought together PSD, CDS-PP and PPM.

The moment was even marked by replacing the plaque indicating the CDS-PP parliamentary group on the parliament wall, next to the new room assigned to the two deputies, Nuno Melo himself (elected by the Porto circle) and Paulo Núncio (elected by the Lisbon circle). This moment was attended by several leaders, current and former deputies, former presidents of the party, such as Paulo Portas, José Ribeiro e Castro and Manuel Monteiro, or the historic leader Narana Coissoró.

Nuno Melo has already announced that he will be a re-candidate for the leadership of the CDS-PP at the next party congress, in April.
