Loulé City Council states that the sea storm over the last few days has caused the sand at Praia do Forte Novo, in the parish of Quarteira, to disappear and has also led to the partial destruction of the walkways and urban furniture there. The municipality says that there is a project to recharge the sand in that coastal area.

As a result of the damage caused by the sea, “work will now be carried out to remove all debris and other waste accumulated there in order to clean the entire affected area”.

The city council guarantees that “it will later undertake the rehabilitation of the walkways and adjacent equipment as soon as the conditions for this are met, that is, when the entire beach is properly “replaced””.

Meanwhile, Loulé City Council reveals that “ARH Algarve – Portuguese Environment Agency has already carried out a project to recharge the entire sandy area between the seafront of Quarteira and Ancão beach, the estimated value of which is around 14 million of euros”.

The aforementioned project was submitted in an application for community funds under the Climate Action and Sustainability Program (PACS), explains the chamber, adding that, “after approval of that application, an international public competition will be opened to carry out of the contract to replace the sand”.

The municipality says that it was a “regrettable occurrence, causing damage to the tourist image of the region” defending the need “for the legislator to create the necessary legal conditions, through the institution of a regional fund for an immediate and simplified response to the serious consequences of climatic phenomena, which will increase in frequency in the future”.

Finally, the chamber emphasizes that “it will remain attentive and will be in permanent contact with ARH Algarve to resolve this situation as quickly as possible”.
