Vila Nova de Poiares has an Active Aging Skills center. The protocol for installing the district center was signed by the mayor of Vila Nova de Poiares, João Miguel Henriques, and the director of the Active Aging Skills Center, Nuno Marques.

The new structure, which is already in operation, is installed in the Municipal building adjacent to the Town Hall, and aims to promote a positive approach to aging, training professionals in these areas with skills so that they can offer better care and services high-quality differentiators with the aim of improving the quality of life of the elderly.

According to João Miguel Henriques, Mayor of the City Council, “it is a source of pride for Poiares to have been chosen for the installation of the Active Aging Skills Center, an area that is so important and should deserve our full attention. , in order to provide the best quality of life for seniors”.

“The work we have been developing in this area is notable, whether they are initiatives from the Municipality itself, or from various partners and local institutions, so the choice of Vila Nova de Poiares is also the recognition of our concerns and commitment to these themes”, said João Miguel Henriques

Nuno Marques, Director of the Active Aging Skills Center stated that “the most immediate objective is to improve the quality of life, by 2030, in two years, for those over 65. It is a goal within our reach, but for which we need to act in different fields, first of all with people who are now aging, but also in a preventive way”, he said.

“From 2025 onwards, Portugal will be the oldest country in Europe, so this is an opportunity to prepare, train ourselves, and make the necessary changes so that we can all live better with this reality”, he highlighted.

An objective that is shared by the Mayor, João Miguel Henriques, who highlighted the “need to create conditions for a better quality of life for the senior population. An example of this is the integration of the City Council into a European consortium, within the scope of the Erasmus+ Sport Project “European Active Aging Challenge” (EUAPPTIVE), which is developing software to be implemented in Vila Nova de Poiares that will allow the promotion of improvements in health, physical activity and healthy lifestyle for the elderly, digitalization, innovative practices and inclusion”, he concluded.

Also present at the protocol signing ceremony were the Vice-president of the Intermunicipal Community of the Coimbra Region, Luís Paulo Costa, the Vice-president of CCDR – Centro, Alexandra Rodrigues, the Director of the District Social Security Center, Manuela Veloso, the technicians who are already working at the Center, and several local entities that operate in this area.
