The resigning president of the Government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, stated this Wednesday that the prime minister, Luís Montenegro, knows the region’s problems “very well”, pointing out that it is now necessary to “try to put it into practice”.

“The current prime minister knows Madeira’s problems very well. In fact, he perhaps knows better than any other prime minister and what we need is to try to put it into practice”, said Miguel Albuquerque, speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a visit to a housing project at controlled costs, in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos.

Miguel Albuquerque highlighted the review of the Regional Finance Law, whose work must continue, as well as other pending ‘dossiers’, such as the new Madeira Free Zone regime.

Regarding the new Government of the Republic, which took office on Tuesday, the Madeiran social democrat highlighted that it will be an executive that “depends a lot on the formation of consensus in parliament”, since “unfortunately it does not have the majority to govern”.

“Some of the measures will be carried out by government decree, but the regime issues, the essential issues will have to be consensual”, he stated.

Miguel Albuquerque, who won the PSD/Madeira direct elections on March 21, also said that Luís Montenegro, who is the party’s leader, will be present at the Social Democrats’ Regional Congress, which takes place on April 20 and 21.

The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, and the 17 ministers of the XXIV Constitutional Government took office on Tuesday, at the Ajuda National Palace, less than a month after the victory of the AD (Democratic Alliance, a pre-electoral coalition formed by PSD, CDS-PP and PPM) in the March 10 legislative elections.

The Secretaries of State of the XXIV Constitutional Government, who are not yet known, will only take office on Friday.

António Costa resigned as Prime Minister on November 7 last year, after it was made public that he was the target of a judicial inquiry opened by the Public Ministry at the Supreme Court of Justice as a result of Operation Influencer.

The President of the Republic immediately accepted the Prime Minister’s resignation and decided to dissolve parliament, scheduling early legislative elections for March 10th.

These legislative elections resulted in AD’s victory by around 54 thousand votes and 0.85% more than the PS, the shortest margin in the history of democracy.

The two coalitions led by the PSD – AD, on the Mainland and Azores, and Madeira Primeiro (PSD/CDS-PP) – obtained 28.83% of the votes and 80 deputies (78 from the PSD and two from the CDS-PP), according to the official results.

The PS was the second most voted party with 27.98% and 78 deputies.
