Carmo’81, in Viseu, hosts this Saturday (April 6th) at 5pm a session commemorating the International Day of Gypsy People in an organization of the local nucleus of the Olho Vivo association.

In this session, the books “Know me before you hate me – History and Gypsy Culture” and “A História do Ciganinho Chico” will be released, written by Bruno Gonçalves, mentor of the Opré Chavalé project – which encourages access for gypsy communities to higher education – and trainer for the Council of Europe in the area of intercultural mediation.

The works will be presented by Vânia Cardoso Lourenço, graduated in Law, and Verónica C. Lourenço, student of International Relations at the University of Coimbra. The documentary “History and Gypsy Culture” will also be shown. Entry is free.

International Gypsy Day is celebrated on April 8th because it was on this day that, in 1971, the first World Gypsy Congress was held in England.

The date aims to celebrate the unity and diversity of gypsies around the world and the contributions of this ethnic group to universal culture and to the culture and history of each people and country.
