The Youth Hostel in Portalegre is “practically completed”, according to IPDJ Regional Director for Alentejo, Miguel Rasquinho, speaking to Odigital. The works “have been progressing normally, without any gaps in the deadlines and I am convinced that, in the next 15 days, the company will be ready to make the final delivery”, added the director.

An additional 54 beds will therefore be available for students, young people, but also for “all types of users”: “It is a very important investment”.

“Contrary to what people imagine, a youth hostel is not just for young people and Portalegre, at this moment, is starting to have a large tourist flow, largely due to the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park, and there is accommodation there with a lot of quality”, the director also highlighted.

Regarding prices, Miguel Rasquinho reflected that “they will not be the prices that are practiced in the rest of the market”, even so, the director admits that the accommodation will have “all the conditions” for a good stay: “That was what mattered”.

A long-awaited project in the city, after being closed for 11 years, the Youth Hostel received a large investment, which together with the IPDJ building, amounts to 500 thousand euros.

“We are concerned about making all services available to young people, athletes and others”, said Miguel Rasquinho, adding that another concern was also the building’s auditorium: “A big concern we had”.

“We need to have a complete building, where, for example, some congresses, some meetings can also be held”, stated the regional director, further detailing that “what has been done, in recent months, is the requalification of fabrics stage, light, sound, the installation of Wi-Fi, the installation of new air conditioning”, also stating the installation of a new floor, “because that floor was already very dilapidated”.

This was an investment that cost “perhaps 100 thousand euros”, according to Miguel Rasquinho, but which also served to “requalify and repair the roof of the building itself”.

The Portalegre Youth Hostel is located on Av. do Bonfim, located in the building that also houses the Alentejo Delegation of the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth (IPDJ). The Pousada, which has been closed to the public since 2012, occupies the 3rd and 4th floors.
