AIP. Foreigners look to Portugal as a ‘gateway’ to the PALOP

-

“ANDThis Portuguese-speaking space is a reference in international contacts, because in visits by ambassadors and [de responsáveis de] foreign countries, always have a reference not only to Portugal, which is a small market, but also the involvement and impact on Portuguese-speaking countries, which have enormous potential for investment and increased commercial relations”, said Jorge Pais.

Speaking to Lusa and RTP on the sidelines of the Mozambique-Portugal Business Forum, which takes place this afternoon at the Centro Cultural de Belém, in Lisbon, Jorge Pais added that “the development of Portuguese-speaking countries is a situation internationally recognized as being of enormous importance for Portugal”.

Asked about the sectors that would most likely be welcomed in Mozambique, the vice-president of AIP highlighted civil construction, tourism, the energy sector and infrastructure.

“Mozambique has 33 million inhabitants and in 10 years it will have 60, there will be a huge increase in population, with the consequent housing needs, therefore it is a sector that will grow immensely and where Portuguese companies will be interested in paying very close attention”, he stated .

The head of AIP also highlighted that tourism is a sector that is still little explored, “which is why tourism, hotels and restaurants are very important”.

In addition to oil and gas, which are fundamental for the country’s economic development in the coming years due to its large reserves, Jorge Pais highlighted other energy resources as particularly important for Portuguese companies in the context of the energy transition that African countries are trying to carry out. .

“Technologies and the energy sector are other important areas, but there is also awareness about renewable energy, to combat the carbon footprint, and several companies, even in the consultancy area, are interested in this sector, which is a very important market , because companies (…) prefer to start with a country that speaks the same language and with which we have this historical and cultural relationship”, he concluded.
