The next few days in mainland Portugal will be marked by a sudden change in the weather. The sun and warm weather will give way to clouds, with rain, cold, thunderstorms, hail and a special ingredient, snow. Here’s the forecast!
The final stretch of April will bring an interesting and, in a way, surprising variability in weather conditions to the continental territory. After hot days that made us think we were in pre-summeralthough characterized by localized showers, thunderstorms and episodes of hail, behold, we will have significant changes.
As Meteored Portugal anticipated, the anticyclonic scenario will be removed and will give way to a depression, which should be well dug during the weekend. This scenario is not abnormal, although it is surprising due to the winter conditions that will bring. So we can hope rain (a smell of “April, thousand waters”), some wind, cloudiness, cold and a special ingredient, the much-loved snow.

Today, a large part of the continental territory witnessed a slight drop in temperatureseven though in the North and Center interior there is room for a small recovery at lows. A typically spring day, although with positive thermal anomalies, mainly on the coast. Castelo Branco recorded a maximum of 21 ºC.
The day was marked by little cloudinessalthough it increased in the afternoon in the North and Center Regions, with high clouds. We will also attend a change in wind directionwhich will generally blow weak to moderate, from the East quadrant in the morning, to the northwest, in the afternoon.
What will the 50th anniversary of April 25th be like?
Thursday (25), day to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Revolutionmust be marked by a further drop in temperatures, already significant, especially the highs, especially on the west coast. Inland this descent will not be so evident. The undefeated city, Porto, will reach 19 ºC. The sky will appear very cloudy, especially to the north of the Tagus and slightly cloudy to the south.
The wind will blow from the northwest, generally weak to moderate, with the exception of the western coastal strip, the highlands and the western Algarve, where it should blow moderate to strong. It is likely that in afternoon period, there is already some occasional rainfall in the North and Center regions of continental geography.
For Friday (26) it is expected further drop in temperaturesalthough less pronounced than the previous day. Minimum temperatures are expected to reach 10 ºC in Leiria and 8 ºC in Vila Real.
The arrival of a front associated with depression should be felt in the early hours of the day and will make the sky generally very cloudy, bring periods of rain or showers, especially in the North and Center regions, with an incidence in Minho. Gradually, throughout the day, this precipitation will extend across the entire national territory, although with little intensity in the south.
The news goes to Serra da Estrela, which You should see the first snowflakes fall, at the highest points, at the end of the day. As for the wind, it will initially blow weak to moderate, increasing in intensity throughout the daycoming from the western quadrant.
Weekend with a winter flavor
Saturday (27) will bring a “taste” of winter, resulting from the installation of the depression to the north of the continental territory. It is expected, therefore, a ddecrease in minimum temperatures across practically the entire continental territory, especially in the interior North and Center. And so, strong cooling at night is expected. A minimum temperature of 2 ºC is expected in the highest city, Guarda.
It is expected that rain continuously in the early hours of the day, later already in the form of showers. Therefore, it is expected that precipitation at night be in the form of snow and paint the highest points of the Gerês, Larouco, Alvão, Marão and Estrela mountains white.

In Serra da Estrela it is expected that snow accumulate above 1600/1700m. If predictions are fulfilled, we will be able to witness interesting accumulations also at the highest points of Gerês. As for the sky, it will appear in general very cloudy.
There is also the possibility of thunderstorms in the North and Center regions, in the afternoon, with hail falling. The wind will follow the same trend as the previous day, from the western quadrant, losing intensity throughout the day.
And on Sunday, April 28th?
On Sunday (28) minimum temperatures will reach a significant decline across the continental territory, more evident in the northern and central interior regions of continental geography. A minimum temperature of 0 ºC is expected in Terras de Trás-os-Montes, Bragança.
A new front associated with the remnants of the depression alternately filling the sky with clouds, giving way to showerswhich must be presented in the form snow at the highest points of Serra da Estrela.
Although there is some uncertainty, we can still hope to snow above 1000 meters in the municipalities in the extreme north of the country and other mountain systems north of Montejunto-Estreladaytime.
The wind will generally blow weak to moderate, from the west quadrant, changing towards the end of the day towards the north quadrant. It is likely that there will be room for episodes of thunderstorms, especially in regions south of the Tagus River.
