The Chamber of Amares applied for a project worth nine million euros to move forward with the complete requalification of the only Secondary School in the municipality, whose works have long been demanded by the school community. The municipality’s candidacy was presented for a financing line of 450 million euros, opened by the previous Government, within the scope of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).

“The school was created in 1984 and has never had any major intervention,” the Mayor of Amares, Manuel Moreira, told JN this Wednesday, expressing “hope” that the candidacy will be approved. “We know that there are many schools in need of work, but there are cases that are more urgent than others. Our Secondary is classified as a very high priority, so we trust that the works will progress”, highlighted the mayor.

According to Manuel Moreira, the project was designed by architect and professor Pedro Veloso – who is part of the management of the Amares School Group – before being worked on by the municipality’s services. “A market study was carried out that allowed us to reach the final value, nine million euros, which will be the necessary investment”, he highlighted.

According to the mayor, the intervention will make it possible to “respond” to the existing problems that have led the school community to express themselves, namely water infiltration, the lack of specialized laboratories and thermal problems in the classrooms. “The complaints from students, teachers and staff are fair and make sense”, guaranteed Moreira.

The school was included in the Parque Escolar project – which has since been suspended – and in 2019 Parliament approved a recommendation to the Government for “urgent rehabilitation and requalification”, but the overall works never progressed, with only interventions carried out on the roofs.
