Africa and the Carnation Revolution in Portugal

-

April 25, 1974. 50 years ago Portugal freed itself from fascism. Africa’s contribution to this was notable. What did it consist of, how did it happen? The editor, Filinto Elísio, and philosopher, Filomeno Lopes, respond in the broadcast “Africa in Cultural Clave: characters and events”, focusing on the figure of Amílcar Cabral, whose centenary of birth is celebrated this year and about whom there are books and international colloquiums on the way.

April 25th is a public holiday in both Italy and Portugal for reasons linked, although at different times, to the liberation from Nazi and fascist dictatorships.

In the case of Portugal, where it is known as the “Carnation Revolution” (1974), it is also associated with the liberation struggles of the then Portuguese colonies in Africa. It is a time to ask ourselves about the role of Africa in the overthrow of fascism in Portugal.

That’s what we did in today’s broadcast “Africa in Cultural Key: characters and events”, putting the question to the partner in this broadcast, Filinto Elísio, from Rosa de Porcelana Editora, who is in Rome to build relationships with a view to holding important cultural events for Africa, Italy, the Church, and who have the see with new interpretations of the fiftieth anniversary of the independence of Portugal’s former African colonies and the various figures who fought for these independences. One of them is, without a doubt, Amílcar Cabral, for whose centenary of birth Rosa de Porcelana Editora has on its program an international scientific colloquium and a literary tribute within the scope of the Festival Literatura Mundo do Sal, scheduled for the 10th to 16th of June 2024, on the island of Sal, in Cape Verde. For this occasion, a set of books by or about Amílcar Cabral is being prepared by Rosa de Porcelana Editora.

Filinto Elisio and Filomeno Lopes during the broadcast

Filomeno Lopes, journalist, philosopher, scholar of African issues and author of several works, has just published the book in Italian “Amílcar Cabral: a bridge between Italy and Africa” which will be presented on April 30, 2024 at the Italian Government Palace. It will be a tribute to Amílcar Cabral and a reflection on the theme “Italian diplomacy and the contribution of religions to the construction of peace in the PALOP, Portuguese-speaking African Countries”. The book – explains the author – is a philosophical reflection on the figure and work of Amílcar Cabral as a leader, and on the solidarity of thought that existed at the time between Italy and Africa.
