April 25th: Lamego pays tribute to local power: Gazeta Rural

The celebration of 50th anniversary of the historic dawn of April 25, 1974 was marked in Lamego with the holding of a program of institutional, cultural and sporting events. Lamego celebrated, in this way, freedom and citizenship in democracy to keep the memory of April’s ideals alive and demonstrate its confidence in a pluralist, democratic and truly free Portugal.

The Solemn Session of the Municipal Assembly was the act that had the greatest symbolism during the celebrations, with the intervention of all the political groups that make up this body. This year, a symbolic tribute to local power, by virtue of the service provided to the public cause, and imbued with a feeling of deep gratitude towards all the mayors who played a role in transforming the territory who, despite their differences, served Lamego and the Lamecenses.

“The former mayors were true agents of local power who, selflessly and with a high sense of public service, dedicated so much of themselves to building democracy in our community and strengthening local power as a factor in the country’s development. In truth, the local power that we honor, was an important achievement in April, due to the transformative effect it had and has in Portugal“, highlighted the President of the Municipal Assembly, Ricardo Morgado.

In this evocation of the importance of local power, former mayors and Municipal Assembly presidents participated, while some honored mayors, due to various vicissitudes, were represented by family members. To everyone, the Municipal Assembly offered a Municipal Medal and a beautiful silkscreen, by the artist João Pedro Fonseca.

Among other initiatives, the proclamation of the values ​​of Freedom and Democracy also included a luncheon “Bring a Friend Too”at Centro Multiusos, with the participation of hundreds of people, and a great musical show with several artists from the municipality.
