Leader in the USA, ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ debuts in 2nd place at the box office in Brazil; ‘The Chosen’ is 1st!

-

No one expected this. The series ‘The Chosen – The Chosen‘ (The Chosen) – which features the first two episodes of the fourth season in theaters – debuted in FIRST PLACE at the box office in Brazil.

Based on the life of Jesus Christ, played by Jonathan Roumie, The series has been highly praised for its high technical quality and adaptation of the biblical story. It is one of the most watched on Prime Video, Peacock and Netflix streaming and has already accumulated more than 12 million followers on the production’s official social networks.

The success did not give space for the debut of ‘Kung Fu Panda 4‘, which despite topping the North American box office opened in a shy second place in Brazil. Who would say?

After leading for two weeks, the national comedy ‘The Farofeiros‘ fell to third position.

Check out this Thursday’s TOP 10, with our interview, review and follow CinePOP on Youtube:

In less than two weeks, the sequel ‘Kung Fu Panda 4‘ managed to surpass the mark of US$170 million at the global box office.

Don’t forget to watch:

With US$30 million grossed in its second weekend in the USA, the film remained at the top of the box office, registering a drop of just -48.3%.

In total, the animation already adds US$ 107.7 million in North American territory. In the international market, they were US$68.7 million – totalizing US$ 176.4 million worldwide.

It is worth remembering that, despite achieving the franchise’s lowest average approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes – with 70% approval from critics –, the new film received a rating A- from viewers on CinemaScore.

Considering that the budget of the fourth film was only US$85 million – significantly lower than the expenditure of the previous films (budgeted around US$ 150 million) – the new sequel is on the right track to become a new success for the franchise and the genre itself.

For comparison purposes, ‘Kung Fu Panda 3‘ (2016) premiered with US$41 million and collected US$521 million globally. ‘Kung Fu Panda 2‘ (2011) premiered with US$47.6 million and closed with US$665 million. The original film, Kung Fu Panda (2008), had the franchise’s biggest debut, with US$60 millionand ended its box office run with US$632 million.

This spring, for the first time in nearly a decade, the comedy star Jack Black returns to the role of Po, the world’s most unlikely kung fu master, with a hilarious new chapter in DreamWorks Animation’s beloved action-comedy franchise, ‘Kung Fu Panda 4‘.

After three adventures risking his life to defeat the most powerful villains with his unparalleled courage and incredible martial arts skills, Po, the Dragon Warrior (Jack Black, nominated for a Golden Globe) is called by destiny to… Ah, give it a break! Well, to be more exact, Po was chosen to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace.

The choice is problematic for several… obvious reasons. First, Po knows as much about spiritual leadership as he does about the paleo(lithic) diet. Furthermore, he needs to find and train a new Dragon Warrior as quickly as possible before assuming his new imposing position.

Worse still, recently, a wicked and powerful sorceress, the Chameleon*, was seen in the Valley of Peace (Viola Davis, Oscar winner), a small female lizard that can transform into any creature, big or small. Chameleon has her eye – with her bright, greedy little eyes – on Po’s Staff of Wisdom, which would give her the power to bring all the master villains ever defeated by Po back to the spiritual realm.

So, of course, Po is going to need help. He finds her (sort of?) in the quick and cunning thief Zhen (Awkwafina, winner of the Golden Globe), a steppe fox who drives Po crazy, but whose skills will be invaluable. In their crusade to protect the Valley of Peace from the reptilian claws of Camaleoa, the two will form an unusual duo and learn to work in partnership. With this, Po will end up discovering that heroes can emerge from the most unexpected places and times.

Kung Fu Panda 4‘ has the direction of Mike Mitchell (Trolls, Shrek Forever After) and co-directed Stephanie Ma Stine (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power series). Rebecca Huntley (The Bad Guys) signs the production. In 2008, ‘Kung Fu Panda‘, the Oscar-nominated inaugural installment, became DreamWorks Animation’s highest-grossing original animated film and launched a franchise that has grossed more than $1.8 billion at the box office worldwide.
