The Cinemateca has already been marking 50 years of the ‘carnation revolution’, but dedicates a more intense program in April, namely with the screening, on the 25th, of short films that were deposited, as part of a collection campaign .

This campaign was launched last November, together with the 50 Years of April 25th Commemorative Commission, and what was asked was that citizens send amateur films about the revolution of April 25th, 1974, so that the Cinemateca could safeguard them.

“This resulted in films on film, more or less elaborate, some with raw material, others with extensive sound and image editing work, some made in isolation, others in the context of small groups, such as the Núcleo de Cineastas Independentes”, he explains. the Cinemateca Portuguesa in the April program.

All films will be presented in digital format, but the collection campaign remains ongoing: It is “a project of prospecting, digitizing and exhibiting works with incalculable value for our collective memory, which does not end here, but will continue in our coming months.”

In November, when he launched this campaign, the then director of Cinemateca, José Manuel Costa, recalled that “amateur films were not subject to the censorship of the Estado Novo nor to any limitations or previous formatting, which makes them an invaluable source for understanding the Portuguese 20th century.”

Also in April, on the 26th, the Cinemateca will show more than an hour of raw images – without editing – made by “young filmmakers” who were part of the first class of a school that would give rise to the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema .

“On the morning of April 25 [de 1974]several of them enter the Cinema School premises, grab the 16mm cameras and the film that was there, and take to the streets”, explains the Cinemateca.

Among the students were João Botelho, Monique Rutler, Jorge Alves da Silva, Paola Porru, Jorge Loureiro, among others.

The film reels were identified and digitized by Cinemateca from a recent deposit that the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema made of its analogue archives.

The entire April program designed by Cinemateca Portuguesa – which also includes an artistic installation by Luciana Fina and the beginning of a cycle dedicated to cinematography from three of the former Portuguese colonies – can be consulted at cinemateca.pt.
