In an interview with Marie-Claire magazine, actress Kirsten Dunst spoke about her career, including a nickname given to her by the Spider-Man trilogy production team that made her very uncomfortable.

About to star in Civil War, Alex Garland’s new feature film in which journalists witness the collapse of the United States, American actress Kirsten Dunst recently spoke to Marie-Claire magazine about her career as a whole.

Referring especially to her recent difficulties in finding roles that deviate even slightly from a certain type of character, she regretted having been absent from the screen since her acclaimed performance in Jane Campion’s Attack of the Dogs:

“I haven’t worked in two years”she said.

“There are fewer good roles for women my age”

“All the roles I was offered were sad mothers. (…) To be honest, it’s been difficult for me, because I have to feed myself. The hardest thing is being a mother and… feeling like I have nothing This applies to all mothers, not just me (…) There are definitely fewer good roles for women my age.”.

“We need a girly girl”

Recently nominated for an Oscar for her role in Jane Campion’s latest film, Kirsten Dunst is still just 41 years old. Also in an interview with Marie-Claire, the actress also went back further into her career, talking about Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and a nickname that made her particularly uncomfortable on set:

“It was a joke, but in Spider-Man they sometimes called me ‘girly girl’ on the walkie-talkie. ‘We need a girly girl’. But I never said anything like, ‘Don’t call me that. We never said nothing. We just let it go.”

In 2024, Kirsten Dunst will return to silver screens, starring in the anticipated drama Civil War, directed by Alex Garland.
