Superhero films are going through a difficult time in theaters, with many box office failures. One of the most recent cases is Madame Web, a film from the Spider-Man universe that didn’t even reach US$100 million in revenue. However, this failure ended up doing the Marvel Cinematic Universe a favor.
Madame Web is not the worst Marvel film: 10 years ago, the worst-rated film was released
Madame Web made just US$98.8 million at the box office (on a budget of US$80 million), becoming a huge failure in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
As an article from Screen Rant highlights, Madame Web’s box office numbers were lower than any film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The lowest-grossing film in the franchise is The Marvels ($206 million), followed by The Incredible Hulk ($263 million), the only MCU films that didn’t exceed $300 million.
Therefore, the failure of Madame Web ended up doing Marvel Studios a favor, showing that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s box office could be even worse and that they continue to have greater interest, somewhat overshadowing recent failures such as The Marvels. Even so, the MCU films have a much greater investment, which is a very worrying sign with the latest results in cinema.
Madame Web shows the origin story of the title character, played by Dakota Johnson. In the plot, Cassandra Webb leads an ordinary life working as a paramedic in Manhattan until, one day, she discovers that she has the ability to predict the future. One of her visions ends up leading Cassandra to young Julia Carpenter (Sydney Sweeney), Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced) and Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor). It doesn’t take long for the four of them to understand that, together, they are destined for something very powerful.
