Civil War, the newest feature film directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina), is now showing in Brazilian cinemas.

Civil War, currently showing in cinemas, is called by its own director, Alex Garland, an “anti-war” work. And for this reason, the plot set in a not-so-distant future, when a civil war breaks out in the United States, despite presenting declared references to films such as Apocalypse Now, by Francis Ford Coppola, ends up looking elsewhere for inspirations that speak to better with the tone adopted by the filmmaker.

One of these references is in a Soviet film directed by Elem Klimov, and considered by many to be one of the best films of all time: Go and See. Because it is so brutal, Alex Garland calls it an example of an “anti-war” film, in a recent video posted on Letterboxd’s TikTok.

In the video, Alex Garland cites Go and See as one of his favorite films, and reveals that he turned it into a mandatory title for the Civil War cast to watch, before filming. Check it out below:

In Vá e Veja, young peasant Florya (Aleksei Kravchenko) is co-opted by an unprepared group of anti-Nazi guerrillas. In a confrontation with the Germans, the boy is left behind and decides to return to his village. Arriving there he is faced with the desolate scene of a massacre. Disturbed, he starts to wander aimlessly, witnessing increasingly powerful scenes.

You can watch Vá e Veja for free on YouTube, in its original version with English subtitles. Just search for the title in English: Come and See. Civil War, with Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura and Cailee Spaeny, is showing in cinemas.
