The legendary and influential band Van Halen, one of the greatest entities in the history of Rock/Heavy Metal, has millions of fans around the world. Max gave an interview to Guitar World and talked about the guitarists who shaped his way of playing guitar. Eddie Van Halen, founder of Van Halen, topped the list made by the Brazilian frontman.
“I’m a big fan of Van Halen. They actually came to Brazil around the early or mid-80s. It was in the early days of Sepultura, or maybe a little before that. I became obsessed with buying cassette tapes of Van Halen bootlegs. Halen live I liked them even more than the records, because they gave me a different experience.

I loved the records, of course, but you could feel the band on those bootlegs, even if they were poor quality recordings. Some were [gravados] from the soundboard, but many were from people in the crowd holding a cassette player; there were no telephones or internet at that time”, said Max, who did not see Van Halen’s shows in Brazil, held in 1983.
“I had a pretty big collection, maybe 40 tapes, plus a book full of photos of the band. You could say I was obsessed; they were my first band crush! Unfortunately, I missed that show; I was very young and my mother wouldn’t let me go. I was very upset about that.”

Finally, Max praised Eddie Van Halen, guitarist who passed away on October 6, 2020, aged 65.
“But my obsession continues to this day. Eddie is one of the most mesmerizing creative forces of all time. Not long ago, when we played some shows in Europe, I spoke to his son Wolfgang and told him how much his father meant to me. He I had no idea!”
The most recent work in Max Cavalera’s busy career is “Unhealthy Mechanisms”, Go Ahead And Die’s second album, released in October 2023.
