Last year, however, fans turned on the yellow lights when Pete Townshend said a cycle had been closed when it came to The Who. His comments regarding the future were vague. Now, in 2024, the yellow light has turned red with the announcement of a solo tour by vocalist Roger Daltrey. Could The Who have silently come to an end like an elephant retreating to die?

In a recent interview with the New York Times, Townshend spoke about the subject and confessed that he had been touring with The Who just for the money. It all started when he was asked if he would like to do new music for the band.

“Yes, I do, and I think I still will. To me, it seems like what the Who might do is one final tour where we play all over the world and then drag ourselves out to die. I don’t feel very excited about playing with the Who. To be honest, I’ve been doing the tours for the money. My idea of a common lifestyle is pretty lofty. I’ve been immensely creative and productive throughout this period. [sem um novo lançamento do The Who]but I didn’t feel the need to release it.”
Although Townshend still sees a future for The Who, he then spoke about the band in the past (and took the opportunity to poke fun at AC/DC, just to keep from getting used to it): “AC/DC recorded 50 albums, but they’re all the same That wasn’t how the Who worked — we were a band of ideas.”
