The President of the Republic reportedly severed relations with his son, Nuno Rebelo de Sousa, following the case of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins who were treated in Portugal with the drug Zolgensma. The information was provided by Public newspaperwhich cites the Correio Braziliense.

“It’s unforgivable, because he knows that I have a public and political position and I pay for it (…). I don’t know if he will be held responsible, I don’t care. The Portuguese head of state recalls that the son is 51 years old and “older and vaccinated”.

The relationship with his son, who lives in Brazil, had not been good for months, says the Brazilian newspaper. The case of the twins would have been the final straw.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said, according to Correio Braziliense, that when the son came to him to try to speed up the process of the Brazilian twins to take the drug Zolgensma, the President of the Republic was going to undergo heart surgery and ended up leaving the case aside.

Months later, in 2019, Nuno called his father to tell him that the Civil House of the Presidency of the Republic was against him.

“2020, 2021, 2022 pass, 2023 comes and the case comes. It was necessary to resort to technology to recover the messages. I didn’t remember the twins,” she claims.

Irregularities

The case became public in November, at the time of the resignation of the Prime Minister, António Costa. At stake are suspicions of favoritism that came from an email sent by the son from the President of the Republic to his father.

In April, the General Inspection of Health Activities (IGAS) confirmed irregularities in treatment in the National Health Service, which cost the State millions of euros. According to the report, there is evidence of irregularities in scheduling the first appointment at the Santa Maria hospital in 2020.

According to the IGAS report, the then Secretary of State for Health became aware of the twins’ case after a meeting with the son of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, on November 7, 2019, “in which he was asked to collaborate to obtain treatment with the drug Zolgensma.”
