On the Antena 1 program Variable Geometrywhich is now four years old, Aguiar-Branco stated that the Attorney General of the Republic must eliminate suspicions regarding the role of the Public Ministry in the cases of Operation Influencer, which led to the fall of António Costa’s Government, and the investigation that gave rise to the political crisis in Madeira.

The former Minister of Justice stressed that he does not believe that “there is premeditated conduct, on the left or right, to create political facts through criminal investigation”.

“Any of us do not want to believe that there is premeditated conduct on the left or right to cause a certain political fact through a criminal investigation, but the truth is that no one lives alone in the world and it needs to be explainedbecause if it is explained and if the situation when explained makes it clear that suspicion does not exist, I think we are contributing to these two worlds coexisting in a healthier way for democracy”, highlighted José Pedro Aguiar-Branco.

Regime pact

The President of Parliament considers it essential to establish a regime pact for justice, using a methodology “to get there”.

Asked whether justice could trample democracy, Aguiar-Branco said he could not draw such a conclusion.

“Because I assume that things happen not with that intention and that this happens involuntarily, even more justifies the need to clarify and have spaces where the Portuguese can understand. I think the Assembly of the Republic is the excellent space for this to happen“, he advocated.
