A Apple recently released iOS 17.4, an update that is especially important for European iPhone users and aims to comply with the regulations approved with the Digital Markets Law – which aims to create a fairer and more competitive market by ‘opening’ some of the most used services around the world.
Please note that the measures applied by Apple are exclusive to territories within the European Union, so you will have access to them if you travel to countries outside this region.
One of the best new options is the possibility of access other virtual application stores in addition to the App Store, with companies like Epic Games having already announced that they intend to launch iOS versions of their virtual stores. Still in the field of applications, iPhone users in the European Union will also have the option of install apps from developer websites – an option that will only be available with iOS version 17.5.
These are all big changes but, on a day-to-day basis, the one that promises to make the most difference is the possibility of change your internet browsert – effectively exchanging Safari for another proposal of your choice. When updating your iPhone to iOS 17.4, Apple will ask you which browser you prefer and you can choose an option from those that appear in the list presented.
Finally, iOS 17.4 allows you to Payment apps make use of NFC technology integrated into iPhones – the same one used by the Apple Pay payments app. With this update, it is possible that other payment apps can use ‘contactless’ technology, as is the case on Android.
Please remember that iOS 17 is not compatible with all iPhone models. The only models that can update to this version of the operating system are the iPhone Xs, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, iPhone 15 series and also the iPhone Xr, iPhone SE (2nd generation) and iPhone SE (3rd generation).
