Windows 11 has functionality that hasn’t been updated in 30 years. Do you know which one it is?

Windows 11 is one of the most radical changes to the operating system since Windows 8. Microsoft wanted to leave the past behind with a rethought interface to improve the user experience. However, there is one feature that hasn’t been updated in 30 years. Do you know which one it is?

Windows maintains 1994 design

Dave Plummer, a former Microsoft employee known for creating Task Manager and other essential Windows features, shared an interesting fact about X. Plummer revealed that the disk formatting feature maintains the original 1994 design.

What is most surprising is that the dialoguewhich presents options such as capacity, file system, and label of the volume, it was a temporary solution.

I wrote this dialogue on a rainy Thursday morning at Microsoft in late 1994.

I took a sheet of paper and wrote down all the options and choices I could make regarding formatting a disk, such as file system, labelcluster size, compression, encryption, etc.

Plummer wrote.

The former Windows NT programmer reports that he used Visual C++ 2.0 to generate a dialogue vertical with all options sorted.

It wasn't elegant, but it served until an elegant user interface appeared.

He added. Interestingly, this never happened and Microsoft kept the design unchanged.

O dialogue Windows disk formatting is one of the operating system's many features that maintain the classic look and feel. While some criticize the lack of an update, Plummer is proud of his work.

If it was a bad thing, I think they would have changed it by now.

Responded to one of his disgruntled followers.

Why does Microsoft keep old features?

Over the past few months, Microsoft has removed some old features that were retained in Windows 11. Some of them, like Explorer, have been redesigned to fit the new framework, while others (WordPad) disappeared because they are no longer used.

The Control Panel is a part of that past that many Microsoft users reject, but there are compelling reasons not to remove it. Unlike macOS, Windows is installed on hundreds of millions of business and government computers. Deleting a feature or updating the design of a feature requires a thorough analysis of its impact.

Windows is a victim of its own success, which is why updates like Windows 8 or 11, which include radical changes to its interface, they never start. People who have used Windows for a long time are used to certain settings and ways of doing things.

Complete removal of old functionality can be confusing for these users.
