Not even studios understand the need for a PS5 Pro

You’re not alone when you question the need for a PlayStation 5 Pro. Game developers are at it too, and during the Game Developers Conference (GDC) they commented that they don’t even understand the idea of a mid-gen upgrade at a time when many producers still haven’t even taken advantage of the full capabilities of Sony’s console.

The comments were cited by Games Industry website editor Chris Dring in a podcast edition dedicated to GDC. As expected, the still unconfirmed new version of the console was one of the topics of informal conversations during the event, given the leak of possible specifications and an alleged delivery of information to partner companies of the PS5 manufacturer.

In conversations, another topic that tends to come up a lot among players is the feeling that the new generation of consoles has barely started. As we head towards the fourth anniversary of the PlayStation 5 and also the Xbox Series the market.

A PS5 Pro, the developers point out, would not be the solution to this, however. For them, betting on more original and innovative ideas using current hardware sounds more interesting than a graphical update. Experts also point out that the idea that the platforms’ potential has not been harnessed does not come from hardware issues, but rather from the economic impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic and the recent turmoil in gaming companies.

PS5 Pro specifications have already been leaked

While the idea that Sony would do a mid-generation update for the PlayStation 5 was already expected — it happened last time, with the PS4 —, conversations heated up last week. The specifications of the supposed new console were leaked after Sony, theoretically, handed over such data to partner producers, so that they could work on improvement patches for current and future games.

Even development kits for the new platform would already be in the hands of producers, while Sony does not comment on the matter. The expectation is for a launch later this year, possibly during the Christmas season, bringing a more powerful PS5 option to the shelves, alongside the recent Slim editions of the video game.

In terms of hardware, we are talking about a console that would be capable of running games at up to 8K resolution, with triple the performance power of the current PlayStation 5. Technologies like ray tracing would benefit greatly from this, while titles would load faster due to 45% greater rendering power and over 100 GBs more available memory.

For now, there is no official confirmation of a PS5 Pro. However, if the plan is to launch the new version of the console at the end of the year, an announcement should not be long in coming. The company, of course, says nothing about the matter.
