Police investigate murder of Brazilian from the US Forces

The United States Police Department is investigating the disappearance and murder of Brazilian Anna Laura Costa, 22, US Army soldier. The main suspect in the crime is the young woman’s supposed ex-boyfriend, Luís Antônio Gomes Akay, 36, also a Brazilian living in the USA. He confessed to killing the young woman after an argument in which the victim asked for an end to the relationship.

Initial investigations suggest that Anna died after a holiday trip with Luis in Los Angeles on 27 December. Police negotiated with the man information about the victim’s body.

The young woman’s mother, Erbena Costa, spoke for the first time about the case in an interview with the “Encontro” program on Globeon the morning of this Tuesday, 10. According to family members of Anna Laura Costa, who was a soldier in the US army, the young woman’s boyfriend made an agreement with the Los Angeles Police to indicate the location of the body.

Anna Laura’s family also discovered that Luís Antônio Gomes Akay is suspected of killing another young woman six years ago. The victim had a relationship of about four months with the suspect and, after asking to end it, she disappeared on February 27, 2017 and was never found.

After negotiations with the FBI, the boyfriend accused of murdering the young Brazilian girl confessed where the victim’s body is. The family reported that they were called by the US police about the information. Luís Akay has been in prison since last week.

According to the Federal Police and information released by the G1, the man confessed to killing the young woman after an argument in which she asked for the end of the relationship. However, since the arrest, he has not wanted to inform the police where the victim’s body was. This Saturday, the 7th, he reported that he left Anna Laura in a mountain area.

The American police informed the family that they will search for the victim’s body, but that this has not yet been done due to bad weather. For the confession, the police reported that they proposed a bail agreement so that Luís awaits the trial in freedom.

The stipulated amount is U$$ 2 million, which is equivalent to approximately R$ 10 million, and the amount can only be paid in cash. The victim’s family could not say whether this amount was informed to the confessed killer, only that he accepted the agreement and indicated that Anna Laura’s body is in a mountain region, difficult to access when it rains.

Anna had been in the United States for at least five years, where she completed her final year of high school and higher education. Recently, after finishing her studies, she joined the Armed Forces, where she was serving as a soldier. At the end of December, she took a vacation and told her family that she was going to Los Angeles with her ex-boyfriend.

On December 27th, she had the last contact with her family, when she said that she had asked for a break from her relationship with Akay. Afterwards, she no longer answered calls or responded to messages. The family formalized the disappearance in Brazil, and the Federal Police called the FBI, which began investigations.

During the interview in “Encontro”, Anna Laura’s mother said that the killer kept in touch with the victim’s family at the beginning of the searches. In an audio sent to one of the relatives, he tells what supposedly happened on the day of the disappearance. “Nothing, we just argued, she left the room. I thought she was just going to get some air, do something and she didn’t come back, you know?”

“The woman just called me from the police complaining that I’m calling too much, she said ‘she’s not missing, she took a flight home and she just doesn’t want to be with you anymore'”, said the man in response to the family that I was looking for news of the missing woman.

Still according to the family, Luís Antônio would have said that he spent two gallons of gasoline during the search for Anna Laura. However, after being found by the police and questioned, he confessed that he had killed his girlfriend.

Since then, the police had been looking for a way for the confessed killer to reveal where the body was. It was then that an agreement was proposed, so that Luís would pay bail and be able to await the trial in freedom, in case he revealed where the body was.

The couple did not have daily contact, and the meeting between the two was occasional, most often during the short trips they took together. According to Anna Laura’s family, Luís had an obsession with the young woman. They had known each other for two years, but the relatives cannot say exactly how long they had been in a relationship.

“He met Anna through a cousin of ours who lives in the US and rented out rooms. He was her tenant, and from the first time he saw Anna Laura, he created an obsession for her, he wanted to conquer her at all costs, but Anna didn’t want him, and he kept insisting”, said a cousin of the victim.

Anna Laura’s family also discovered that Luís Antônio Gomes Akay is suspected of killing another young woman six years ago. With the repercussion of the case on social networks, the young woman’s relatives discovered that Akay had a relationship of more or less four months with another victim, and, after the woman asked to end it, she disappeared on February 27, 2017 and was never found. .

At the time, the case was dismissed for lack of evidence, and the body was not found. However, due to the case of the most recent victim, it will be investigated again. For legal reasons, neither the name of the other young woman nor the city can be disclosed until the proper authorization.

In addition to the feminicides, Anna Laura’s family also received several messages from Brazilians living in the United States and reported that they suffered fraud from Luís Antônio Gomes Akay.
