Amid increased tensions on the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, a Haitian citizen died during a confrontation with a Dominican soldier.

The incident occurred at the ‘La Javilla’ customs house in the province of Dajabón, as reported by a press release from the Dominican presidency.

According to the text, the fatality occurred “because a group of Haitians intended to take away the soldiers’ weapons.”

The document says that one of them was injured and died during transport to the hospital, adding that the others fled to Haitian territory.

The Dominican army is conducting an investigation to clarify the dynamics of the facts, but the preliminary version is that the soldiers were victims of an attempted attack by a group of Haitian citizens.

For reasons of national security, due to the growing violence in the neighboring country, Dominican President Luis Abinader recently closed the 390-kilometer land border with Haiti, implementing severe restrictions on the movement of goods, and declared the Haitian Prime Minister to resign, Ariel Henry, “persona non grata” in his country.
