The National Association of Sergeants warned today that the promotions announced on Friday for the Armed Forces arrived again late, causing losses to the military, and require changes so that promotions and remuneration are carried out in a timely manner.
On Friday, the Ministry of Defense announced that 6,459 soldiers from the three branches of the Armed Forces will be promoted this year, benefiting from the update of their career position with remuneration effects.
The National Association of Sergeants (ANS) reacted today, in a statement, stating that the announcement by the Government, still in office, is nothing new and that, despite the approval in 2024 happening earlier than in 2023 and 2022, “it continues to sin due to delay.”
“The promotion plan in the Armed Forces should have been approved before the end of the year 2023, prior to that to which the promotions relate, to thus allow military and militarized women and men from the different branches to have their position updated career in 2024, with the corresponding remuneration effects, recognized on the date the vacancy for promotion opens and not as it has been happening”, he states.
For the ANS “it is the most basic justice to grant the right to remuneration in the position from the date of seniority expressed in the respective promotion order”, with retroactive effects.
The organization warns that these delays cause financial losses (delay in the salary differential), functional losses (the soldier performs functions in a lower position than he should already have), motivational and social losses (due to the damage it causes in the calculation of retirement pensions).
Therefore, the military demands the amendment of the Armed Forces Military Statute, so that remuneration is awarded from the date corresponding to the new position.
“With this proposal, a previous practice would be resumed and an austerity and economistic norm from the times of the ‘troika’ would be eliminated, which continues to this day, solely at the will of the governments”, they state, urging the government that comes to take mandate to “give due attention to these matters”.
In the statement released on Friday, the Government specified that the approved Armed Forces promotion plan covers 1,538 military personnel and 95 military personnel from the Navy, 3,335 military personnel from the Army and 1,491 from the Air Force.
According to this note, this year the approval of the promotions plan occurred even earlier than in 2023 and 2022 to allow the promotions of the covered military personnel to take place throughout the year to which they relate.
