The 1980s proved to be particularly fertile ground for filmmakers to show the world that, contrary to popular belief, remakes can be better than the original. David Cronenberg achieved this in 1986: in The Fly, he delivered a mix of horror and science fiction that would later become a huge cult classic.

The Fly: Body horror at its peak

Based on the short story of the same name by George Langelaan, which was made into a film in 1958, tells the story of a scientist who developed a teleporter. But he soon tires of using only objects in his experiments, and decides to use a monkey for the final test – which has devastating consequences.

Not only does the film become increasingly disgusting as it progresses, but at the same time it also reveals a deeply human horror. In addition to Cronenberg taking the time necessary to introduce his characters to the audience, what also helps is the super charismatic lead actor Jeff Goldblum, who knows exactly how to engage his viewers.

And, of course, there is the soundtrack by the legend Howard Shore, which underlines the film’s theme and its violent and bloodthirsty peaks with the dark sounds that match it perfectly. Its music is the film’s atmospheric glory and establishes it as an incredibly atmospheric gem that, even after more than 35 years, still captivates you from the first minute to the last.
